Pigmentation

What is it?

Your skin’s pigmentation is the natural colour determined by the amount of melanin produced by specialised cells. Melanin is the pigment responsible for your skin tone, hair colour, and even the colour of your eyes. It’s when your body produces too much or too little, that it can lead to a range of pigmentation issues.

Dark patches or ‘Hyperpigmentation’ is caused by excess melanin production, like melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Light patches or ‘hypopigmentation’, where melanin is lacking, such as vitiligo or post-inflammatory hypopigmentation.

Pigmentation changes are often seen as just a cosmetic concern, but they can signal underlying health issues or be the result of genetics, sun exposure, hormonal changes, or skin injuries.

Still Have Questions?

Will my pigmentation come back after treatment?

Pigmentation can recur if triggers like sun exposure or hormonal changes persist. That’s why we combine advanced treatments with ongoing maintenance and strict sun protection to prevent reoccurance.

Yes. Our dermatologists specialise in treating pigmentation across all skin types, including darker skin tones. We customise treatments to prevent irritation or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Are pigmentation treatments safe for darker skin tones?

Treatment type, strength and frequency, as well as individual variation will affect your results timeline. Advanced treatment options can show noticeable improvement from a few days to a few weeks, especially when you’re consistent. However we will go over more detail during your consultation.

How long does it take to see results?

Over-the-counter products may offer mild or temporary improvements, but often lack the strength needed for significant results. In comparison our medical-grade options are far more effective, especially when guided by our experts.

Can I use over-the-counter products for pigmentation?

In some cases, you may experience mild redness or temporary darkening as pigment is brought to the surface. This is normal and usually resolves quickly as your skin adjusts.

Will the treatment make my skin worse before it gets better?

Exfoliation

Consider gentle chemical exfoliants (like AHAs or BHAs) to promote cell turnover, for fresher, more radiant skin.

Vitamin C

Use this powerful antioxidant serum in the morning to help brighten skin, even tone and reduce hyperpigmentation.

Sun Protection

Always use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days. UV exposure is a major trigger for pigmentation.
